Dan--thanks for this. Mitchell's piece is particularly interesting to me--always glad to see that people are linking law with culture in the years leading into Civil War. But you didn't mention Judge Pollak's article on ranking. Given this week's US News craze, I think it may deserve a post of its own. I've thought for a long time (as I think have a number of people) that schools should be put into tiers (as Judge Pollak does), rather than rank-ordered 1 to .... whatever. I think the groups her presents in the appendix to his article make a lot of sense.

One suggestion on how a new journal might build "goodwill" with potential authors: acknowledge receipt of manuscripts and give timely feedback on the review status. (Hint.)
