I love to read, so for Christmas one of my family members gave me a membership to the Book-Of-The-Month Club. As part of my membership, I receive the monthly BOMC newsletter that provides brief descriptions of numerous books.
In a recent newsletter I noticed a just-published book titled “Little Pink House.” I didn’t recognize the author (Jeff Benedict) and was about to turn the page. What caught my eye, though, was the subtitle: “A True Story of Defiance and Courage.” The book jacket also trumpets the story as “One Woman’s Historic Battle Against Eminent Domain.” I’m still scarred by my performance in Property many years ago (I penned a lengthy brilliant essay on restraint against alien nations, but apparently I missed the other forty-two issues), so a book on “eminent domain” doesn’t grab me quite like it might Lounge co-host, and property guru, Al Brophy. Nevertheless, I was sufficiently enticed to read the two-paragraph teaser. I discovered that the homeowner in the story is Susette Kelo, the petitioner in Kelo v. City of New London, Connecticut, the controversial 5-4 decision handed down by the Supremes in 2005.
Sounds like a book I should add to my reading list. You, too?
