I've got to figure out whether a lawsuit that the New York Times reports on today, between two billionaires over whether a very strange yacht qualifies for the America's Cup, could fit within the "law of People magazine" series. True, it hasn't yet appeared in "People Magazine." However, the series really is about legal issues in popular culture (mostly the law of the rich and/or famous). So sometimes we include material that isn't in People.
The Times article is surprisingly scarce on details, but--get this--it turns on the interpretation of an 1887 deed of gift that established the America's cup race! What could be better. This is the second time in two weeks that a nineteenth century grant has appeared in the press. (The San Diego Union Tribune has a little more here.) So, hey, even if it doesn't fit with the People Magazine series, it may still find a home in my trusts and estates class.
