As I was watching Entertainment Tonight yesterday--desperately trying to get ready for the new semester and fill up on some pop culture (and also take a break from the ubiquitous beach volleyball at the Olympics), what to my wondering eyes did appear?! News of Jackson Browne's Lanham Act suit against Senator McCain for using Browne's song "Running on Empty" in a campaign commercial! Actually, People Magazaine's website doesn't have the story yet. So it'll have to be an honorary member of the "law of People Magazine series," but the New York Times does. (Turns out that the RNC ran the ad rather than Senator McCain--but, hey, why let the facts mug a great issue for discussion.) Of course, if I'd been surfing the net yesterday at work instead of working on University, Court, and Slave, I'd have seen this at the Wall Street Journal blog already.
And perhaps since this is a post about copyright, I should add that the photograph of Mr. Browne comes from wikipedia.
