Those who are interested in issues of memory of the era of slavery and changes from one generation to the next in attitudes towards race will find Nick Bromell's article from the spring 2008 issue of the American Scholar ("The Liberal Imagination of Frederick Douglass") of much interest. It's about Frederick Douglas' memoir of meeting the descendants of the man who held him in slavery. It's a heartening tale of forgiveness and humanity and understanding. Plus, the article is beautifully written.
