Thats the choice the AP is giving bloggers who use excerpts of their articles on-line. The fee will range from $12.50 to $250 depending on the number of words excerpted, and appears to apply even when bloggers provide attribution to the service and link to the original content on-line.
Given the time I'd go back and delete all of my AP content out of principle - not because I'm particularly interested in backing the policy, but to avoid driving any more traffic to their articles. Leaving it up of course means I'll have to bank on the argument that much of what's out there qualifies as "fair use." In the future I'll just link to Reuters (until they go the same route), notwithstanding the generous discount pricing AP makes available when a "teacher, administrator or student" uploads an "article solely for educational purposes."
oh, crud . . . I think that just cost me $7.5o!
