The tuition in the numbers in the chart seem a bit bogus. Three year tuition at Columbia is roughly $150,000, at CUNY is roughly $45,000, a difference of about $105,000. Yet in the chart, they seem to have the difference in non-tuition costs of about $180,000 ($290,000 vs. $110,000). Non-tuition costs at two schools in the same city should be about the same.


Not necessarily; Columbia is in a tony uptown area of Manhattan, while CUNY is off the Long Island Expressway in Queens. Rents within commuting distance of CUNY are going to be significantly cheaper than those within commuting distance of Manhattan.
