I have just heard from Carl Tobias the beloved and distinguished professor Dan Meador of the University of Virginia law school has passed away. Meador, a native of Selma, was educated at Auburn, the University of Alabama, and Harvard. And his career spanned a clerkship with Justice Hugo Black, service in the U.S. Army, and service as an assistant attorney general in the U.S. Department of Justice under President Carter. Though most of his academic career was spent in Charlottesville, he also served as dean of the University of Alabama in the mid-1960s. Here is an extensive article from the Daily Progress detailing how much he was beloved and accomplished.

It was my very good fortune to be taught federal courts by Professor Meador. He was a superb teacher who managed to communicate the material clearly without minimizing how difficult and complex many of the cases are. He was the consummate Southern Gentleman in the very best sense of that term.
